It's tough to properly express my love for BBC America. Having spent some of my formative years in England, I have a love for the people, culture and language. (No bones about it...it IS a different language!) But my favorite guilty pleasure of the moment is a show that has been running (off and on) since 1963.
The protagonist flies through time and space in a ship that's bigger on the inside than on the outside. He has a habit of kidnapping women (and sometimes men) to accompany him on his flights through the universe, often putting these "companions" in incredible danger. He's a renegade from a dead alien race, has two hearts, is over 900 years old and has occupied eleven different bodies so far.
You still with me?
Doctor Who is a sci-fi/fantasy mashup with sharp writing, excellent acting and production values that keep it leagues ahead of other genre shows. And while the deep history of the show may seem intimidating, the rebirth of the show in 2005 came with a natural re-introduction of all the moving parts. And with each new Doctor, the producers re-set the table for new viewers.
And we have a new Doctor...the youngest to ever take the role. It's too early to tell if Matt Smith will be one of the "great" Doctors. From where I sit, he's really good. One aspect of the Doctor that Smith has highlighted in a couple of episodes is that the Doctor can be kind of a dick at times. It seems a natural by-product of constantly battling to save the universe and/or having to watch people die, which is a bit of an occupational hazard for this Time Lord.
Anyone who's watched the show throughout its run has a favorite Doctor, villain and episode. A whole generation of Britons have grown up with these characters and this show. After runs on PBS with the good episodes hijacked for pledge drives and SyFy delaying episodes for months, BBC America is now running episodes within a week of their UK premieres.
I suggest setting the DVR and giving this import some headspace for a week or two. With the end of Lost and the cancellation of Heroes, this is the show that is a contender for the sci-fi slot in your life.

I can help with that. Domain names, customized email solutions, websites and hosting. Those and fancier tricks up the old sleeves.
Important dates, holidays and notable time/space coordinates. There are also some fairly random items as well...just for grins.
Funny, I've heard of both of them. And have a digital footprint in both places...mad, crazy scribblings of a digital nature.
